My vote will always go to Robin Williams and Christopher Reeve.
Robin Williams and Christopher Reeve first met when they were students in Juilliard. Both of them were the only students selected for Juilliard’s Advanced Program and they have several classes where they were the only students. They developed a close friendship during that time.
Before they became famous, both of them promised each other that whoever made it in their career will take care of the less fortunate one. But both of them become really successful in their career and they remained good friends for the rest of Reeve’s life. Christopher Reeve achieved stardom for his acting achievements particularly in the famous movie Superman (1978). The movie grossed about $300 million dollars. Robin Williams got nominated for an Academy Awards for his performance in Good Morning, Vietnam.
Unfortunately, Reeve became a quadriplegic after being thrown from a horse during an equestrian competition. This resulted him to depend on his breathing tube to breath properly. Reeve underwent multiple operations and one of the most dangerous operation requires the doctor to reattached his skull to his spine which has only 50% chance of surviving. Reeve even considered committing suicide during that time. Then, at an especially bleak moment before the operation, the door flew open and in hurried a squat fellow with a blue scrub hat and a yellow surgical gown and glasses, speaking in a Russian accent.” The man announced that he was a proctologist and was going to perform a rectal exam on Reeve. It was Robin Williams, reprising his character from the film Nine Months. Reeve wrote: “For the first time since the accident, I laughed. My old friend had helped me know that somehow I was going to be okay.”
Williams assured Reeve that he would cover any medical expenses when his insurance ran out. Considering the number of operations, Reeve’s bills mounted up to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Reeve later started Christopher Reeve Foundation and Williams become very involved in the foundation.
They remained very close friends until Reeve passed away in 2004…
