Roles are reversed on Emperor Penguin: the Male incubates the egg while she goes out to feed.
For emperor penguins, it is solely the responsibility of the father to incubate and look after the baby once the mother has laid the egg. The reason for this is quite simple, male penguins have stored reserves of fat and that is why during the mating period, the females look out for the fat guys.
One of the main reasons why male penguins take on the responsibility of incubating the egg is due to the harsh Antarctic climate. The breeding season coincides with the coldest time of the year, and temperatures can drop up to -40 degrees Celsius. Hence, it’s essential that the egg is kept warm to ensure its survival.
