When I got my period I came downstairs after dealing with it. My dad was in the living room. I said, “Dad, I’m a woman now, can I have a raise in allowance?” He said yes :-)

Later that day we had some cake to celebrate my entering womanhood. It was very sweet, and gave me a good feeling about what was happening to my body.

I never got the impression he had any other feelings about it , other than not wanting to hear the messy details.

My father is a massive prankster since pretty much forever. He still pulls my pony, throws water on me, switches off my fan while I am sleeping, hits me on my back and then sprints to hide behind the curtain. He is also extremely dedicated to scare me. I think you get the picture?

But, one day when a little me was curled up into a ball and crying in bed, he silently tip toed in my room, kept a hot water bottle beside me, switched off the lights and left without any mischief. When I gathered enough courage to move from my extremely comfortable bed, I saw bananas on the table. (Bananas are my favorite fruit). This is how I knew that he knew.

And, this is how he has been every month ever since.

He will never acknowledge them but deep down I know that he worries a lot about them.

When I first got my period, we were on vacation in another city. I knocked on my dad’s bedroom door and said, “Daaad, I just got my period.”

Through the door, I heard him go, “Ahhhh, s**t.”

Luckily, my sister and my aunty were with us, so they were able to assist in the nitty gritty. My mum cried on the phone, because she was back at home and couldn’t be with me for this momentous occasion.

My family has always been pretty open about most things. I can’t say for certain how my dad feels or felt, except perhaps sympathy? I get really bad cramps and sickness, so every time I get my period he always apologises that this must happen to me (“I’m so sorry, sweetie. It’s not fair, is it?”), Hands me the chocolate and listens to me complain, tolerating a surprisingly graphic amount of detail.

Actually, I just asked him what he felt when me and my sister got our periods and he looked at me for a moment, then shrugged and said, “I dunno, ‘poor things’? I mean, what can I do about it?” Then he laughed and said, “I thought now I’m going to have to worry that one day I’ll hear ‘Daddy, I’m pregnant!’”

So there you go. Now he’s feeling sentimental and talking about how proud he is of me while I try to write this answer. Life is hard.
