The word 'school' comes from the ancient Greek for 'free time.'

The word “school” comes from the ancient Greek for “free time.”

Everybody knows the word school but very few know the origin of the word and the ancient Greek etymology. The Greek word for school is σχολείο (scholio) and originates from word σχολή (scholé). Word σχολή in new Greek is a university or college department. But in Ancient Greek was the place that people used their free time. Aristotle taught in his schole. Which people went in their free time. (Actually schole were for rich people with many slaves so they had a lot of free time). So even if know we think that school was very demanding and most of us we didn’t go in our free time, the word originates from the place you go to relax and think.

Even in Modern Greek we use the verb σχολάω (scholáo means I ended my working ours/ shift) which is closer to the ancient meaning because then it starts your free time.
